Fashion weeks are crazy. There is this duty (duty for the ones - desire for the others) of being everywhere, seing everything, attending all the shoes, meeting everyone - or at least the "important" ones, not to miss the show and place to be (well ok, I mix up duty and desire, the others and me). Between all the shows, the events, the launches, the parties, the pop up stores... oh là là, and then you want to think about, analyse and try to understand the collections, the designer's new vision, their interpretation of today's society.

Evidently, the most suffering in this crazy circus are the journalists, editors and stylists for whom it is not that much fun any more when everything becomes a hysterical rush from one town to the other, from one show to the next, 

and then for me, working in office all day, preparing a big show and still eager of seeing other collections, meeting people, oh what a conflict, well

 you have to move fast - fast -  fast 

Stefano Tonchi of the New York Times complaines about fashion having become this "full-on entertainement machine" and really calls into question today's and tomorrow's fashion industry:

"The problem with international fashion weeks and their legitimacy is a larger one now that fashion moves so fast and is a full-on entertainment machine. Are biannual fashion shows really the way to present fashion when stores need new merchandise every week? When there are so many collections presented throughout the year, when fragrances and other accessories and products are so important to the life of the brand, what does it mean to run across the planet to see similar collections over and over again every six months?

Shouldn’t we rethink the whole system and have fewer fashion weeks and instead more showroom meetings with buyers and fashion market editors? Shouldn’t designers take more time to really work on ideas and to research new fabrics and shapes and show only when they are ready and have something new to say? Shouldn’t their marketing teams make better use of the budgets for what really is significant to the life of the brand?

This is not just a Milan problem but an international one. It is a good problem because it indicates that we are part of a growing process. Fashion has become more and more important in our culture, and it has to play a more significant role in shaping the future of it. But it does take time. Surely more than a weekend."

Giovanna Battaglia yesterday night at the Vogue Bar opening at the Hotel Crillon in this fantastic cut out leather dress from   Francesco Scognamiglio's brandnew Autumn Winter 2011 collection, if anybody got a picture of her, don't hesitate to send it over... well this gave me the chance to discover his collection, here another highlight:

At first sight it might seem difficult to find the "read thread" in John Galliano's new AW 2010 men's wear collection he presented yesterday in Paris, in a former bank on Place Vendôme, a somehow less impressive set than the famous swimmingpool last season. Actually there seems to be no leitmotif between the very English Sherlock Homes' emerging from behind a gigantic loupe with trenches and pipes and the deearstalker changed against Colonial style desert hats, the very elegant Dorian Grays' in doubled-breasted suits and then - the most mysterious and unidentifiable, yet very Galliano familiar part - some kind of kung fu fighters in panties with laces in their hair, and at least the Geisha-boys in sarouels. But if you look a bit closer there is one motif coming up in all these four themes: pieces taken out of women's'closets. In the year 2010 it's definetley up to the guys to adapt girls' wardrobe. We have seen men in skirts and sarouels before, but rarely in corsets and suspenders, but now John Galliano adopts the women's item per se: the corset,his fetish item for Dior collections and distinctive mark of New Look, named waspie.

So have a second look and find the sarouels in the first theme and then the variations of the corsets in the other three...

about primary values: we all need to trust, to feel save and secure. there is nothing more traditional than the idea of the family being this place called home where ideally several generations share the same space, the same food and - the same clothes. It seems quite hard to still believe in this ideal, but in fashion we keep on dreaming, and so photographer Jürgen Teller seems to have found such an ideal and imanginary place. He presents us this primary myth with his SS 2010 campaign for Italian brand Missoni - starring grandparents Rosita and Tai having dinner with daughter Angela and grandchildren Magherita, Teresa, Francesco, Vittorio, Ottavio Junior, Marco and Giacomo.

When I first saw it this morning, I could barely believe it. Horst, whom I am worshiping more and more for making me smile every day - you really have to check out his blog which is so different, so refreshing and surprising - was exhuming some very distant and well covered childhood memories. But in reading this one word "Fantaghirò" and in looking at these stills out of the movie, I suddenly felt shifted back in this jaunty light-hearted years of my childhood. Where I spent my time between Christmas Eve and New Year's day in watching these fantastic Italian fairytale movies "Fantaghirò" and "Desideria and the ring of the dragon": full of fantasy and phantasm, witches and wizards, adventurous and rebellious princesses, wicked warriors, mean stepsisters and bewitches princes, battles and love in desert and snow.

This makes me longing, longing for this simple time, but above all longing for fiction, fantasy and phantasm these films already carry in their titels: "FANTAghirò" and "Desideria", personification of longing and desire: so I am longing for Victor falling in love with Desideria without ever seeing her face, only recognizing her by her VOICE, for prince Romualdo loosing his heart to Fantaghirò without properly seeing her face, only recognizing her by her EYES. And all these girls dressing up as men...

Dear Mr. Zizek, 

this is also a message for you, wouldn't you be interested in interpreting these films with your psychoanalytic methods, this would be real fun, I am sure....

Hedi Slimane who delights us continously with the sublime photography of his personal as well as his fashion diary now did a film - about a boy and a bear. pirouettes in the snow, tension and lightness in absolute grace.

This video reminds me Greek art and its aesthetics, the cult of male beauty embodied in it and its idealisation as absolute beauty in 18th century art history, and the emblematic formula developped by the German archeologist Johann Winkelmann:

Fashion photography often shows models posing ridiculously. There's a real art of posing, a whole repertory of facial expression showing the models like dolls, staring into space, with their mouth wide open, lost somewhere in abstract thoughts, dreaming and longing for some absolute in order to appear erotic, sexy, mysterious and inaccessible - everything the reader - we- expect from these perfect women. The conceptual photographer/illustration and design Duo Gustav von Arbin and Vassili Brault shows the models in the very same poses in a very interesting story called "thank you for shopping" alluding evidently to the customer's attitude and expectations. But, instead, they show the models grasping for air, suffocation under plastic bags painted in acrylic over their faces. A sacastic and critical, yet very beautiful artwork.

"To highlight the irony often held within model poses in editorials, we turned obvious sexualy explicit pictures meant to display designer clothes, into a show of models gasping for air."

Russian photographer Alexey Kiselef known for the editorials he did for Dazed&Confused, ID or Russion Vogue for instance does more than only sightly fashion photography. With his artwork he goes far behind the surface. He takes current symbolic codes from today's fashion and media discourse, twists them around in an ironical and satyrical sense and exposes its debauched, obscene and lubricous aspects.

This photo triffles with lots of codes:

Alexey evidently refers to Diesel's SS 08 "live fast" ad campaign showing a young and sexy women changing her baby's napkin while sprinting on high heels, the vaunted ideal of looking still more sexy in the fifties than in the twenties just like Madonna or Sharon Stone, and for sure the trend of adopting children - and so many more...

Matt Tyrnauer from the American Vanitiy Fair and his team accompanied Mr.Valentino Garavani for two years - his last two years - and give an absolutely stunning view on the life and work of this great Italian couturier and his glamorous life he built up in over 45 years with Giancarlo Giametti always at his side. Wow, that's just glamour at its best!

Yes, it's nobody else than Jon Kortajarena whom it belongs to and who was named "model of the year" 2009 by Germany's GQ yesterday night in Munich.

One remembers him particulary from Tom Ford campaigns.

I don't know what to think about all these questions people ask and other people respond to, you find them in all kind of magazines, for instance in the Americain Vanity Fair where at the back page you always have a "noteworthy person answering a series of personal questions".

I am always impressed what people know about themselves. Especially because the answers always seem to be given so spontaneously. Well, evidently, people think about first, but still, there are some questions about things I never thought about, but now I want to know about myself and about you.
It's kind of a game I once played with my big boss staying in Florence for a fashion show, we were assisting to a fitting and therefore didn't have much to do, so he started the game asking me about my 5 favorite films, then about my five favorite bands, then about my 5 favorite books; and actually I realised that these are quite banal things you might think about every day, but I couldn't answer immediately...

The most famous and legendary version of this game is for sure the "Proust questionnaire" named after Marcel Proust and his answers: he had discovered these questions as a young boy in a classmade's confession album called "album to record thoughts, feelings, etc." and aswered them more than once in his life to learn about himself.

Today I gonna start to write my own album and I will start this by answering the questions.

Craig Lawrence: my knitwear king

Inspired by Craig Lawrence's amazing SS 2010 knitwear collection I spent my weekend knitting an incredible big black scarf with a nice cup of tea in front of the chimney. Ok, I did a more simple and decent version, since I am not a Central Saint Martin's graduate, and took my inspiration rather from Rick Owens' dark spirit than from "soft sweets and luxurious cocktails" (cf. the collection's press release) but me too, I will do fabulous loops with my new scarf....

What Women Want. "I love you" Magazine

When I first hold this new German magazine (no worries, it's all in English) in my hands I wasn’t aware of the fact that this is a women’s magazine - for women and written by women. I just was really fascinated and enchanted by their beautiful combination of words, poem like citations and visuals. Above all I was captured by its personal, even kind of naïve approach just to print what they love.
I really like the texts and little interviews done and written by editor in chief Christiane Börndner, the fashion shoots under the creative direction of Alexx & Anton and all these refreshing surprises I won’t tell you….

looking through a veil

Folds. Since a little while I am fascinated about folds, drapery folds, and the way human bodies change through drapery. A rag is the most simple form of cloth: just a piece of fabric. This photograph published in the new issue of Volt magazine shoes in a very exemplary way the impact of clothes on the human body, their interdepency which for me is the essence of fashion.
Where does the fabric end and where does the body start? Where is the boundary? They cannot be seperated anymore, yet is the drapery transforming the body? Is it folding the women's breast and skin? Is it even deforming the harmonious body? The skin seems to fold up and to degenerate the body.
Through the veil the body even looses it's limitation against the background: where does the face end? it all seems to become one substance.

(unfortunately they didn't publish the photographer's name on their website, to find out!)

Its actually the very same motif of the veil which fascinates me in this amazing shoot with Lara Stone for French Vogue's October issue (this shoot showing a colored Lara Stone in an ethnological decor provoked a serious debate on the role and place of colored models and racism in fashion. see the video of the discussion on cnn and follow the discussion on Kristina Gisors' blog)

After several contributions by designers as comme de garçon, Mathiew williamson and lately Jimmy Choo Sonia Rykiel will be the next high-end designer to collaborate with H&M for two collections: a series of lingerie and accessory pieces for this winter that will be launched worldwide on December 5th and - still more interesting - a knitwear collection for spring summer 2010 accompanied by playful accessories that will be launched in around 250 H&M stores on February 20th, 2010.

I am really fascinated about these moving pictures.a few months ago I showed some perls I discoverd in Kristian schullers artwork. now there are more and more designers to use this kind of new media, this new way of presenting fashion which cannot be shown in magazines since they are condemned to be static. we all remember Gareth Pughs video for his last AW 0910 collection,

and now again he gave a preview during New York fashion week of his new SS 2010 collection.

fashion is motion. in true life it isn't static. only on stockmen. a film makes fashion more personal more real I would say. besides motion there is also the role of music: fashion becomes audible and touches our ears...somebody should also write about the kind of music which is a very special and similar one in all of these cases::

online magazines are playing with this advantage over print media and seem to revolutionize the old classic way of fashion productions we know them from all the magazines around the world.

don't forget your fameux "ciré" or Friesennerz or however you call it, next time you are going to Normandie, Bretagne or any of these rather windy and cold seasides. I am talking about these great yellow coats that make you look so fashionable when walking on the rainy beach. and the best thing is, they have got boy's names, so I am very proud of my gleamy glossy LOIC I bought this weekend at the pictoresque harbour of Honfleur. and with this striped lining, he's just perfect. I think it's more than a fantastic word, created by Woody Allen - you got to read his dialogues, you got to cite them out loud with your friends, it's so much fun, actually still more fun than the films, if you got a good reader! you just got to buy "alles von allen", quel jeu de mot, and then you got to find him, the good reader....et c'est parti!

enfin, un début.

in all dem nachdenken über einen, über - meinen - Anfang, über das richtige Verhältnis von Individuellem und Allgemeinem, Altem und Neuem, habe ich mich verfangen. Nun wähle ich als Beginn das schlichte Wörtchen IN, das als Fürwort nicht allein sein kann, und nach einer Fortsetzung, nach neuen Worten ruft und keinen weiteren Aufschub duldet. Das ist mein Beginn und plötzlich ist es ganz leicht.

Neues kommt von selbst. und von einem selbst. ist da, wo man nach unzähligem Hören plötzlich die zweite Stimme wahrnimmt IN diesem Lied, und sich auf einmal erinnert, wie vielleicht auch erlend....
